Who we are

The website Adote um Gatinho – AUG was launched in 2003 by friends and cat lovers Susan Yamamoto and Juliana Bussab. Adote um Gatinho ("Adopt a Cat") is the name of a successful project created to provide a safe no-kill shelter and adoption facility for cats in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. AUG has already found homes for more than 4.500 cats: that is more than an adoption per day! This is only possible due to the dedicated volunteer work and the donations to the cause.

The website provides information and guidance for those who are thinking about adopting a cat. It displays the pictures of the cats available for adoption and a short profile of each one. It also contains all the financial data, such as expenditures and donationsn

Juliana and Susan run a blog where you can find background stories and interesting facts about our cats. The website is updated daily and has more than 10.000 page views every day.

Juliana and Susan met in an internet chat group about cats. They both offered to rescue cats in a park in São Paulo and that was the start of everything.

Since then, they have been working to have stray cats neutered or spayed, vaccinated and treated for infectious diseases, as well as keeping them in a safe shelter or a foster home.

Since the very beginning they have counted on dr. Angélica Lang Klaussner, who has an extensive knowledge of cats, to provide veterinary assistance. Additionally, she offers her friendship and emotional support.

The adult cats live in a shelter supported by AUG, while the kittens stay in foster homes until they are adopted. All the work behind the scenes is hard to believe. Juliana, Susan and the volunteers work full time and in addition they work with the website and the cats. They have to feed them twice a day, clean up after them and take them to the vet when necessary.

Many times they put themselves at risk when they try to catch stray cats on the streets. They do everything they can to save them, but it is not always possible. But hard work pays! It’s so very nice to see how those starving cats are now eating well in their new homes. Also, they are sleeping in warm beds and being spoiled by a loving owner.

In addition to the 13 official partners and 50 volunteers, AUG is supported by many people who donate money, cat food or medicine. Many also advertise the website or buy AUG products.

In the beginning of 2007, Susan and Juliana decided to set up a NGO called AUG in order to legally constitute it. This was done so that they could pursue new challenges and officialize the volunteer work.

We need your help!

For 9 years Adote um Gatinho has rescued, vaccinated and spayed or neutered thousands of cats (sometimes dogs) who were abandoned on the streets suffering because of hunger, diseases or abuse.

As a non-governmental organization, without any sponsors, we rely only on contribution from people who love animals and want to make a life change difference for them.

Your support will mean so much for us and many cats and kittens.

All our cats are vaccinated before being given for adoption and the new owner receives a Certificate of Vaccination.

260 cats are waiting in our shelter or foster homes for a chance to be adopted. Many will not find their “soul mate owner”. Because of this we try our best to make them feel comfortable “at home”.

Nearly all rescued kittens are sick and need treatment before being put for adoption.

All our cats are neutered or spayed before adoption. We also spay or neuter animals from poor owners who cannot afford it.
